Blog Focus

I’ve realised that most of my posts over the last few months have been me aiming to make some sort of transition with my blog. The focus of this blog is something I still wrangle with. I have grown a lot as a web user and realise that a blog is a platform for me to express my views, offer my opinion and interact with like-minded individuals. What it is not, for me anyway, is an income stream of any major sort. Henceforth Lifestyle Project will continue to transition towards being a blog about Chris’s Lifestyle Project predominantly. I want it to serve as a chronicle of my journey, a think-tank for my latest interests and a resource for those on a similar path.

To that end, I will (probably) start posting about a slightly more diverse range of topics, though I believe they will still be of interest and relevance to my subscribers and readers. I am going to use Lifestyle Project as my personal blog (as I still like to be semi-anonymous), therefore topics to cover include productivity, goal setting and simplicity as normal but also branching in to the internet marketing arena as this is an area I am putting a lot of work in to at the moment. Also, if I see fit, comment on anything else that strikes my fancy. The exception for the moment will be pure travel and music posts (gig and locations specific) which I will cover on my travel blog World Troubadour, which will be resurrected once my journey begins.

I have a lot going on at the moment and will be making some big changes, I hope to post on interesting stuff and as my interests changes so much then so will my content, but for now I think I need to stop worrying about it and get on with it.

So the next post could be about anything, but hopefully not me wondering in text form ‘where my blog is going’ – I’m passed that, for now. I think.

Yes I am procrastinating a little this evening, everyone has to once in a while as you can’t work like a machine all the time. I think I’ll tweak those blog topics, and maybe put up some draft posts about random stuff.

See you on the other side.

World’s Best Lifestyle Design Blogger

Hello from the world’s best lifestyle design blogger. It’s been a long time – I’m writing this from my apartment in Buenos Aires (actually on 25 April 2010, I just published in the past so that it wouldn’t go out in the RSS), where I am practising what I’ve been preaching. This post may see a little strange, but it’s an experiment. Please ignore it for now, as all will become clear from the world’s best lifestyle design blogger (probably not me) very soon. Let’s just say that I’m doing an experiment in search engines, utilizing my much neglected blog. You see I have been dabbling, quite extensively in lifestyle design. I am currently on a sabbatical and I am taking my experience as a blogger and putting it in to practice with other things I have learned. The aim? To make money from the internet of course, as well as to continue being the world’s best lifestyle design blogger.

Overdue Update | Lifestyle Design in Action (soon)

Hello everyone – I know it’s been a long times since I’ve done and update, in fact nothing since my blogging birthday, but I’ve been very busy with various projects. There are now less than four months until my fiancée and I quit our jobs and head of for an extended career break. I decided that I need to do everything I can to create a location independent income so I’ve been working on a number of projects and taking everything I’ve learned and taught myself and taking action to make real progress. I’m pleased with the work I am doing now, but have a long way to go to start making an income. The target is that I will be able to in part fund our trip with an income earned online and remotely. The way I see it is that the more money I can earn online the longer our trip will be.

What I’ve been up to

I’m not going to reveal everything, because a) you probably won’t be that interested and b) I have no interest in pushing products or services on my readers. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring options for making money online, and one thing I have identified is that whilst there are a lot of opportunities out there it is important to establish a number of different income streams to establish a more reliable income source. So there are simple things like promoting affiliate products, to more complex activities like providing consultancy and services within my skill set. Needless to say, I have been working hard on both research and more importantly implementing these income streams. Whislt I’ve probably been running at 50% learning 50% doing, the balance is tipping now and I’m aiming to focus my time 75% on doing action orientated, money making activities whilst ticking over 25% of my time on exploring new opportunities and learning. As each day passes I learn more and it I think that it is important to keep learning to maintain interest and grow.

Lifestyle Projects

My main focus at the moment is the above activities related to quitting the 9-5 and establishing an income through other means. I am still focused on fitness too, though as always envisaged that is more of a habit that I maintain than a particular goal at the moment. I’ve dropped being in a band as a project now as it doesn’t fit too closely with traveling but I have plenty more to keep me going. I’ve got research to do for my trip, preparations for leaving to take in to account so I’ve certainly got plenty to do.

I’ve got a lot more to say, but I’ll get back to working on the above. I’ll post updates here on progress and other snippets of useful things as I see fit. Hope you are all well and taking action!

Brilliant FREE Musclebuilding/Fat Loss eBook

This eBook is a well research, refined and proven method that I use myself.

Happy Blogging Birthday to Me!

Today my blog is 1 year old. Woohoo – I didn’t think I’d make it this long!

cake

Considering when I started blogging I used to read a lot of information about how to grow blogs, and how a lot of them have don’t survive past a few posts I think I have done fairly well. Also with my track record for losing interest in things, I’ve done especially well. That’s enough of a pat on my own back there.

I’ve never subscribed (no pun intended) to the ‘post everyday to build content’ way of doing things on blogs. Firstly, although I have no problem churning out that many ideas, I do have a problem with producing that many completed posts. As I have talked about before I find that hardest thing about blogging to be the actual polishing and finishing of my posts.

Blogging in an interesting past-time and certainly has it’s up and down moments. Here are some of my highlights and lowlights from the last year.

Highlights:
1. Getting my first comment on my about page, a very positive it was too.
2. The day that my post 10 Ways To Implement GTD Simply was listed on the front page of WordPress.com I got a lot of hits and comments that day, and my post got listed on Stumbleupon. The good old days of when I wrote about productivity.
3. When I moved to being a Self-Hosted Blog: I enjoyed the process of setting up my blog and though “wow now I can have advertising”. And boy did the advertising pay off – a whole $45 I have earned out of my blog in a year. I need $50 of earnings for the affiliate to pay out! Anyway, making money is not what the blog is about.
4. The day I ran a competition – it did increase my subscriber numbers quite a bit, but I was doing other activities to try and get my subscriber numbers up at the same time. It was nice to run a competition in a small attempt to ‘pay something back’ to my readers.
5. Reaching the 1 year milestone.
6. I have never received a negative comment. Maybe I’m not being controversial enough. I’ve had lots of spam – really what is the point?
7. Getting linked to on Zen Habits (albeit a small link).

Lowlights:
1. Not really getting that bigger a subscriber base. I am very thankful to each and every one of my subscribers and I am deeply grateful for every genuine comment and piece of encouragement I receive. It really makes a difference.
2. When blogging feels like a chore – This is something I’ve experienced in my other hobbies, namely when my triathlon training became like a chore or something I ‘had’ to do, rather than something I wanted to do.
4. When google migrated the feedburner to their system – seriously what went wrong?
5. I’ve only a couple of guest posts, and none on blogs really that stand out in my niche, though the posts I did were great and on great blogs.
6. Staring and not finishing my eBook. Maybe to be resurrected in the future.

One year on and I’ve made some great friends and contacts in the blogging world. I’m still not sure if ‘writing’ as opposed to blogging is something I want to pursue. There is obviously some difference between being a blogger and a writer. I like the idea of being a writer, but I still find the process very difficult. I think I need to pursue another path for my passion and money making potential. As many of you know I have started another blog, WorldTroubadour.com which is my foray in to travel writing. One thing’s for sure, I love to travel and experience new cultures place and meet new people – but will I love (and be any good at) writing about it. Who knows, but It’s a slow start that will get more involved as I quit my day job and travel the world.

Goals Update
I’ve certainly learned a lot about blogging and online in the last year, but I’ve also learned a lot about the subjects that I cover of productivity, lifestyle design, goal setting and beyond. When I started this blog I coined the team Lifestyle Project as encapsulating what we are all working towards in our lives. A very successful part of my site has been the ‘What’s your Lifestyle Project’ section.

I have learned that Personal development is both under and over rated. It is underrated because I think that a lot of people could benefit from making a more conscious attempt to improve themselves. It is overrated by the fact that I think that there is a lot to be said about making a change (talking action) rather than just talking about or researching it. Personal Development is all around us, and essentially we are all the result of the people we meet, the places we go and the experiences we have. Go out and grab these rather than sitting in front of endless blogs learning about how to keep your inbox to zero. Think about what you will regret on your deathbed and make sure that it doesn’t happen. You can be sure having an empty inbox won’t be one of them.

1. Quit the 9-5 – Although I’m still very much working on it, we have set a date and by October we will be free of our day jobs and seeing the world. Financially I don’t know, I’m working on that. Do something that scares you and don’t hold back on what you might regret.
2. Maintain Fitness. I’m still doing this and I’ve managed to persevere through injury, etc.
3. Be in a band – OK this is where I have slipped. Although it might now be sort of happening in directly. The reason it hasn’t happened it because I haven’t taken my own advice and taken the direct action to make it happen. I’m sure if I had I would have made a big progress if I had taking the right actions to achieve this goal.

My personal goals and development have been what has driven the content on the blog on the whole, and that is how it will continue.

Thanks
I would like to thank you each and every one of my readers who has made it to this part of my article. I hope that my waffle strikes chord with you, as does my open and honest style of blogging.

The Future
So what does the future hold for Lifestyle Project? I suppose the question is more what does it hold for Chris, the blogger, the potential writer and / or online entrepreneur. As I’ve said several times, I have learned a lot over the past year and now I am putting this all in to practice. I have aligned my lifestyle project with the required actions to make it happen and this leads me to the unknown territory of traveling the world without a full time job. To make this happen I need to create an income so I’m working on my 4HWW muses, my Location Independent Business and my internet marketing stuff. I won’t be writing about this here, well it’s unlikely. Lifestyle Project will continue to explore lifestyle design in it’s purest and dirtiest forms (yeah like I’m that cool). Stay along for the ride.

(My First) Video Update

I’ve decided to give doing a video post a whirl as i’ve never used iMovie on my Mac before (it is very easy to use it turns out), and I thought it would be fun to inject some other forms of media in to my blog. Also I am going to apply for this job so the experience is useful!

Before you watch the video I feel I should justify a few things:

  1. This is the first ever video post I have done.
  2. I am really more enthusiastic than I come across in the video! Like writing, video posting is obviously something that evolves over time.
  3. My hair isn’t always that messy.
  4. Video editing and understanding that kind of technology is my main motivation for doing the video. Like most people I don’t like seeing my own picture, let alone video so this is not a narcissistic activity.
  5. I deliberately didn’t retake or over edit as I want to see how it comes across in the blog etc.

Enjoy the video and I look forward to your feedback!

Note to subscribers: You may need to visit the site to see the video.

———–

  • As I mention in the video I am currently contemplating a slight change in direction for the blog. Stay tuned – there is going to be a lot more on this…
  • I’m an inspirational blogger! Thanks Jay
  • Yes I’ve had a mess around with my blog design. I’m a lot happier with it now.

And the winner is…

celebration

Thanks to all those who entered my competition to win the Muji-Chrononotebook.

The entry closing date was Saturday 10th January 2009 at 12pm GMT.

Here’s how the winner was selected.

1. I had 11 entries in the end (which was strange because when I announced the competition a lot more people were interested)

I entered the numbers 1 to 11 in to the Random.org website. When put in random order whichever number appeared first would be the winning comment:

picture-1

2. Hit Randomize!

picture-2

3. So No. 7 came out first. Over to the entries to see which comment is No. 7.

4. And the winner is…..MIKE, from Providence, RI – well done Mike, check your inbox!

Thanks for all of the entries and kind comments guys. Look out for more competitions in the future!

A few notes on running competitions on your blog (if you have one)

  • I decided to run a ‘Subscriber only’ competition for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the chance to give a little back to my subscribers as a thanks (to add extra value to being a subscriber of my blog) and secondly to see if running a subscriber competition would increase numbers. It did increase numbers so I am pleased. I am also aware that people may have only subscribed to enter the competition but I am OK with this as it is inevitable, and it still gets me on their radar.
  • I thought it would be really easy to add a password to the end of a blog post that could only be visible by RSS or Email subscribers. How wrong I was! Unless I completely missed something in my googling, there is no easy way. I tried a footer plugin that didn’t work (hence two posts to annouce the competition, sorry about that). In the end I had to get something up there quickly. I used feedburners ‘feed flares’ feature, which is where you can add links to the end of your feed such as “add to delicious” or “digg this”. I tried to make a custom one but I’ve not messed around with XML before so it didn’t work. I had to therefore opt for an already available text only feed flare hence the rather odd password “Hello, World”.
  • What have I learned about running a competition on my blog? 1. Test your entry mechanism first! (I should have done this anyway and not procrastinated – not taking my own advice on that one!) 2. It is a great way to increase subscribers, I got a jump of probably over 30 subscribers. I also got a link off Zen Habits at that time though…

LOOK OUT FOR ANOTHER COMPETITION HERE SOON!

Why I Blog (and 5 other random things)

tags

I’ve been tagged! Thanks to Ross over at the excellent Will it Change You? Blog.

I’m not usually one for chain letters or anything similar to that, but I’ve never been tagged in a blog meme myself so I thought I’d give this one a shot. Please forgive the boring insight into my personal life, but maybe you will find it mildly interesting. I’ve published this on a Friday for some relaxed reading.

OK, here goes -  6 random things about me.

1. I play the Guitar. For those that have followed my Lifestyle Project, this may not be something that you didn’t know but I have been playing for over a decade now and I’m still to be signed. Seriously, I really enjoy playing and find it a great way to relax. I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to song writing and soloing, which is probably why I haven’t really ever managed to finish writing a song and knit-pick the exact notes of a solo over and over again until I get there.

2. I did a parachute jump once. It was a static line jump from 4,000ft. I was amazing and surreal.

3. I’m an Advanced Scuba Diver. Once upon a time I wanted to move out to Australia and be a dive instructor. The fact is that I haven’t done any proper diving for years now, but the flame still burns. I’ve lost my diving log book which was a bit careless. I really want to go diving in Cuba and give my girlfriend the gift of experience scuba diving.

4. I collect watches. Or I like to think I do. I have 10 now I think, but my last watch purchase was to cut this down a bit as I now have a good quality everyday watch and a dress watch.

5. I wear contact lenses. Boring I know but I was running out of things to say.

6. The real reason I started this blog is….well when I originally started I was just messing about with the technology (I’m a well and truly out of the closet geek), I was reading a lot of blogs and getting on the whole productivity bandwagon. One thing I noticed about myself is that I am a starter and not a finisher. I quickly loose interest in things once I have mastered them with a reasonable level of competence. Acknowledging this I starting blogging a few times but gave up quickly. Once I learned more I actually got in to a regular posting routine and it’s been consistent for 8 months now (which is quite good for me to stick at something). Anyway, I wanted to prove that I could finish things, so I though if I could just finish a blog post that would be me learning to finish something. So yes every time I finish a blog post I ‘complete’ something. This is a real challenge for me. I am great at starting blog posts and coming up with ideas, but getting to the finished article is the real challenge, so with every post I publish I get a tiny little bit better at actually finishing things. Small steps.

So there you have it, my 6 Random things.

Here’s the science bit.

THE RULES:

1. LINK TO THE PERSON WHO TAGGED YOU
2. POST THE RULES ON YOUR BLOG
3. WRITE SIX RANDOM THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF
4. TAG SIX PEOPLE AT THE END OF YOUR POST AND LINK TO THEM
5. LET EACH PERSON KNOW THEY ARE TAGGED AND LEAVE A COMMENT ON THEIR BLOG
6. LET THE TAGGER KNOW WHEN YOUR ENTRY IS UP
7. DON’T BREAK THE CHAIN (not actually a rule)

You’ve Been Tagged

I’ve chosen people who are active contributors to my blog, those who have made an effort to communicate with me and those who I think may participate:

Apologies if you have been tagged before. If you don’t want to participate by posting on your blog you could always leave a comment on this post with your 6 things or opt out completely, like I said at the beginning of the post I am not normally one for such things as I like to keep blogging simple.

P.S. I did think of trying to start my own meme asking people “What’s Your Lifestyle Project?” and tagging them in, to try and get the concept circulating around the blogosphere, but I thought it might be a bit spammy.

Anti-Procrastination

Today I’ve got a guest post over on the Saavy Entrepreneur Blog. Please do check it out. Cristina runs an Anti-Procrastination month each October to get back on track with work and stop putting things off. It’s a great idea.

How do you procrastinate?
Think about it, what do you do to procrastinate? I spend loads of time researching various topics on the internet, finding lots information which leads to more information. Then more and more. I’ll make a long list of things to do related to this, more websites to look at, and the spiral continues. This gives me a list of things to do, which is just another way to procrastinate actually doing the important things that I was looking at information about in the first place. Nuts I know.

Celebrating the new Poll feature in WordPress, I’ve set up a quick poll below. Please vote now!
