An Open Letter To Myself: Start Creating

Start creating

Stop consuming. Start creating.

Dear me,

If there is one thing that you are an expert in it is consuming information. You really do know a lot of stuff, and that is why you are always advising people.

It’s great that you have been able to narrow down your interests to your core favourites; travel, technology, health, life and guitar.

They’re still a bit all over the place aren’t they?

So you keep reading.

Reading excellent eBooks and blog posts by world changers such as Chris Guillebeau, Corbett Barr, Tyler Terveroon, Scott Dinsmore, Jonathan Fields, Ev Bogue, Mars Dorian, Ash Ambirge and of course Tim Ferriss and Leo Babauta.

With that love of web technology you are also continually filling your armoury of tips and tricks. Sites like Two Hour Blogger, Social Triggers and Think Traffic are amazing for that.

You continue to learn at lot.

Here is the thing

You have hopes, dreams and aspirations. You want to be a world changer and that is cool.

The problem is that in order to make this happen you are going to have to STOP consuming and START creating.

Look back at that list of people you are gaining influence from. They are all successful in their own way. They are all making a difference in the world.

Do you know why?

Because they are creating.

Maybe you are worried that for now you can’t be a leader. You need to remember that you can start to lead without followers now. You just need to work on your 333 project, and work towards your 1000 true fans.

In order to do this you are going to have to start to take action. Be creative. Do something.

Of course you know all this, but now is the time to take the steps to do it.

  • You have more than enough knowledge to make this work.
  • You have a passion to make this work.
  • You want to be a world changer.
  • You have so much to give.
  • You can help people.
  • YOU JUST NEED TO DO IT.

Go for it. There is nothing to fear but regret.

Sincerely,

Me

Afterword

I’ve written the above to motivate myself. In actual fact I have been making significant roads in to creating rather than consuming recently.

I have some exciting projects on the horizon that are only going to work if I take action and create. I’m only human and occasionally the scales are tipping out of balance and back to consumption rather than creation.

Therefore I hope the above serves as an important reminder to myself and to others that to become a world changer, you have to take action and create.

What are your thoughts? I’d love to hear them in the comments below!

  1. Dude, LOVE this post! I feel like I could’ve written this exact same letter to myself.

I’ve had a similar revelation of my own recently. I realized that my consume/create ratio was a little out of whack and needed to be rebalanced.

But at the same time man, don’t sell yourself short. Even this post right here is a pretty awesome act of creation. And your entire blog itself. I dig what you have to say and find it to be a positive influence. Keep up the good work and let’s both try to create more.

      Hi Jaemin,

Thanks! I had a feeling quite a lot of people feel this way – hence my post.

I see from your blog you are looking seem to be creating pretty awesome stuff yourself!

      Cheers,

      Chris

Way to make me feel guilty for “consuming” your site when I should be working;)

I’ve been enjoying the stuff you have been creating:)

      Hey Jim,

Haha! Hopefully it will spur you in to action

I appreciate you consuming my stuff anyway – thats why I want to create more.

      Cheers,

      Chris

  3. Exactly! Lately, I’ve often been saying these same words to myself. Consuming is comfortable, so much fun and easy to do. It even makes you inspired! But it’s never ending job that never gives you what you ultimately want.

Creation and doing can give you that, and even make you successful.

      Hi Jouko,

      Thanks for your comment!

What are you working on creating at the moment?

      Cheers,

      Chris

Love it. I was reffered to this blog right after I did a huge sale of a book, and mentioned how you had to be a product producer not a consumer. My friend pointed me here said how we were on the same page. Looks like it. I will now consume your blog and break my own rule.
